Throughout their lives Bert Breij (on the left) and Tom van Oosterhout have been fascinated by human rights activists who were able to improve the world in a significant way, such as Peter Benenson.

Bert Breij wrote some historical books, such as: A Question of Principle. A reference for strikers (1973; only in Dutch) and The Mines Opened, the Mines Closed (1981, 1991; only in Dutch), the best sold book on the Dutch mines.

In 2008 Breij and Van Oosterhout together wrote Two million members, about the 200-year history of the Dutch Labour Unions.
